Mobile cold storage and refrigerated trucks

Records cargo temperature, refrigeration unit operation and door events in refrigerated trucks and mobile cold stores throughout the journey, reporting a deviation as it happens.

Mobile cold storage and refrigerated trucks

Why this monitoring is needed

The cold chain in transport has its own weakest link: the road. The cold store at each end is monitored, but between them lie hours or days nobody has any record of. If the cargo arrives spoiled, there is no evidence to assign responsibility.

Most temperature excursions happen at stops rather than on the move: every door opening for a partial unload raises box temperature, and after a long stop it takes hours to recover.

What gets measured

  • Cargo box temperature

Several points in the box, because temperature near the rear door is not the temperature at the front.

  • Refrigeration unit operation

Unit current or a dry contact separates a refrigeration failure from a door left open.

  • Door opening

Every opening is logged with time and duration — the evidence that explains a temperature excursion.

  • Box humidity

For fresh produce, humidity determines shelf life as much as temperature does.

  • Vehicle power and battery

Vehicle battery voltage shows whether the unit still has power during a long stop.

Alarm and automation rules

  1. 1

Box temperature out of band beyond the permitted duration: immediate alarm to driver and control, with the duration logged.

  2. 2

Door held open beyond the allowed time: alarm — this is where most excursions come from.

  3. 3

Temperature rising with the door shut: refrigeration-failure alarm rather than a loading error.

  4. 4

Vehicle battery falling during a stop: alarm before the unit shuts down.

  5. 5

A full trip report with the temperature curve, produced for handover to the consignee.

What the operator gets

  • Every load carries a complete route temperature record, settling consignee disputes on data.

  • A refrigeration failure is announced en route, leaving time to act before the cargo is lost.

  • Loading and stop behaviour becomes measurable, making driver training specific.

Frequently asked questions

Is data lost on routes with no mobile coverage?

No. The logger records locally and the history is complete once coverage returns. The dual-SIM modem also improves the odds of coverage by using two operators.

How do you handle multi-compartment trailers?

Each compartment gets its own temperature and humidity sensor with its own thresholds, since compartments usually run at different setpoints. The LoRa wireless sensors allow in-compartment mounting without routing cable through insulated panels.
